CFCS exam guide: the broad financial crime certification

2 November 2026, 1 min read

The Certified Financial Crime Specialist (CFCS) from ACFCS takes a wider view than CAMS. Instead of focusing on money laundering, it covers the full range of financial crime: money laundering and terrorist financing, fraud, sanctions, bribery and corruption, cyber-enabled crime, and tax evasion.

Who it suits

The CFCS fits people whose role spans several risk types: financial crime generalists, investigators, auditors and those in smaller firms where one team handles everything. If your job is purely AML, CAMS is usually the better-known choice; we compare them in CAMS vs CGSS vs CFCS.

What to study

  • AML/CFT: stages, typologies, the FATF framework, beneficial ownership.
  • Fraud: the fraud triangle, payment fraud, business email compromise, Ponzi schemes, internal fraud controls.
  • Sanctions: primary and secondary sanctions, screening, evasion.
  • Corruption: the US FCPA, the UK Bribery Act, facilitation payments, third-party risk.
  • Cyber: phishing, account takeover, money mules, ransomware.
  • Tax: FATCA, the OECD Common Reporting Standard, evasion versus avoidance.

Because the syllabus is so broad, depth matters less than knowing how the areas connect, for example how corruption proceeds are laundered or how fraud funds move through mules. Check the ACFCS candidate materials for the current exam format.
