Four certifications come up again and again in financial crime compliance: CAMS, CGSS and CCAS from ACAMS, and CFCS from ACFCS. They overlap, but each has a different centre of gravity.

CAMS
The default AML credential. It covers money laundering methods, FATF standards, US and EU rules, building a compliance programme and running investigations. If you're unsure where to start and your job touches AML, start here. Read more about the cost of CAMS.
CGSS
The Certified Global Sanctions Specialist goes deep on US, UN, EU and UK sanctions, ownership rules such as OFAC's 50 Percent Rule, screening programmes and evasion through shipping, trade and front companies. It makes most sense if sanctions are your day job, or if you work in trade finance or payments screening.
CCAS
The Certified Cryptoasset Anti-Financial Crime Specialist covers how blockchains and wallets work, laundering typologies such as mixers and chain hopping, FATF standards for virtual asset service providers, the Travel Rule and blockchain analytics. Useful if you work at an exchange or investigate crypto flows.
CFCS
The Certified Financial Crime Specialist from ACFCS treats financial crime as one connected field. Besides AML it covers fraud, sanctions, bribery and corruption, cybercrime and tax evasion. It suits investigators and people whose work spans several risk types.
Can you take more than one?
Yes, and many people do, usually CAMS first and then a specialist credential. The material overlaps enough that the second one takes less time.
How to choose
Ask three questions:
- What does my current or target job advert ask for? Follow the market.
- Where do I spend most of my working day? AML, sanctions, crypto or a mix.
- What will my employer pay for? Employer-funded study changes the order.
Whichever you pick, test yourself before you book. A diagnostic shows within 15 minutes which domains need work.
